What stops us from taking action and how to overcome it?

This week I have been socialising with a group of friends that aren’t into self-development and they were talking about how rich they would like be. They want to be famous etc. and I began to think about what made people successful and why some people achieved their dreams and desires and others didn’t.  Then I watched a film, ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’.  If you haven’t watched it, he was a normal guy, who lived his life very carefully, going to work and saving money for his family like a million other people.  He daydreamed all day about what he would say to people, how he would be a hero and an adventurer but did nothing about it. An opportunity came up and he grabbed the chance to visit Iceland and had the time of his life.  This led him on a path of synchronicity where he met various people who would help him achieve his goals.

What did he do?

He took action.

BE AWARE, this is a place where I see most clients STOP!

What stops us from taking action and how to overcome it?

What stops us from taking action?

Why I hear you ask?  Because FEAR shows up and your ego kicks in and tells you all sorts of rubbish like ‘I’m not good enough’, ‘I can’t afford it’ and literally stops you from moving forwards.  Even if you have taken the first steps and up-levelled your life many times (I put my hand up to this), FEAR always rears its ugly head.  It’s how you deal with it and acknowledge it that will help you move forwards easier each time.

“All your dreams and desires are beyond this imaginary line of fear that we set for ourselves” – Ann Hobbs.

So how would it feel if you stepped outside of this ‘fear zone’?  Well let me tell you, in my experience (drum roll please)……. NOTHING!  Nothing ever happens.  The fact is that when we kick fear into touch we feel a sense of achievement, we feel proud of ourselves and we say to ourselves ‘why didn’t I do that earlier, nothing happened’.

Let me share my story with you – I was asked to speak at a big event in Kent, ‘The Vitality Show’ and fear showed up time and time again.  My ego kicked in and told me that I wasn’t good enough, what did I have to share with people blah, blah, blah!  I stood in front of the audience shaking with fear. But when I got into my stride, guess what – I had the time of my life!  People were engaged with what I was saying and at the end I phoned my friend and said ‘I DID IT and it was AMAZ…..ING!’.  If I had listened to my ‘what if’s’ then I wouldn’t have done it and taken a step closer to become an inspirational speaker (one of my desires).

So remember, FEAR keeps our small, it keeps us stuck and unable to move forwards.  Here are my five top tips to overcome fear and get the life you want;

  1. Take action – do something every day that is slightly fearful – even if it’s speaking to people, asking for more business, picking up the phone to ask for support.  Every time you overcome this fear it lessens.
  2. Remind yourself ‘Fear is a load of bollocks’ everyday.
  3. When your mind/ego runs through the ‘what’s if’s’, acknowledge it and laugh.  Affirm something more positive like ‘I can do it’.
  4. Fear is good, it tells us we are on the right track so make friends with it and thank it for letting you know. Ask a better question like ‘How can I overcome this fear’, ‘What do I need to do’, rather than simply ignoring that is isn’t there, as this will leave you stuck and not moving forwards.
  5. Write a list of your achievements where you have won over fear.  This will help you to build up evidence to remind yourself that you can do it even when fear shows up.

Let me remind you that you can realise your dreams and desires if you take the first step and then the next step after that.  I see his happen every day with my clients and in my life.  If we can do it, so can you!
