The most painful thing we can do is to create a job you hate!
When we work for other people in a “job” it is easier to decide and walk away when you get bored with the job or feel that the job no longer serves you. Sometimes you get upset and frustrated that it didn’t work out but you get over it and seek out a new job, the one you want.
However, if you are an entrepreneur and have spent years on creating a business then it is more painful to walk away from. You feel like an utter failure!!! I have done this on two occasions so I know how that feels.
The fear takes o
ver, you go straight into how am I going to cover that income, what if is it something I don’t like doing anymore, what if you have to start all over again!!! Pretty scary.
I’ve found over the 19 years that I have been running my businesses I have found that when this has happened, after I’ve got over the fear, it gives me fantastic information. I feel that every time I’ve either stepped away from the business or stepped into a bigger version of the business it gives me such growth and expansion. It allows me to explore what I actually want, why was I bored with the business I created and get excited about creating a bigger and better business that I love.
I hit that wall 2 years ago when I was treating 20 people a week for physical therapy. I decided one day after I hit burn out that this wasn’t what I wanted to do. My ego kept telling me that I had spent 8 years on growing my business, 3 years of training and I didn’t like it. I was too scared to actually tell my husband that I wanted to walk away. My mum felt I was mad, after building up a successful business. I went into all kinds of fear, it was a waste of money, what will people think and how will my clients react. When I got out of all those kind of nonsense thoughts and beliefs I actually realised that I had learnt a lot over those years and was now in a position to move my business forwards.
I got in touch with my passion which has always been helping people to stop struggling. I could still do this but in not in the form that I was as a physical therapist, I just needed to change my vehicle in which I would deliver my message.
I listened to my desires and I realised that I didn’t want to fix people anymore, I wanted to empower them. Something I couldn’t have done had I not had the 8 years of experience of treating people and working out what worked and what didn’t work. I was able and willing to help my clients even MORE than I had before.
If you are in the same position that I was 2 years ago take the time to stop and sit down and ask yourself these questions:-
1. What is my passion in life?
2. What have I learnt so far?
3. How can I have a business that serves me and my values?
When I answered the above questions, I heard myself saying, I can’t do that, no therapist has done that before, blah, blah. So don’t listen to other people, if it is your true desire then it is meant to happen.
